Contemporary dance or aerial dance: which one for your event?

Published on 15 August 2026 · 4 min read

Both forms appeal to the same organisers, but they do not ask the same things of the venue. The choice depends less on taste than on the building.

Aerial dance depends on the ceiling

Silks, hoop, straps: everything starts from a rigging point. That point must be approved by the venue or by a rigging professional, with a stated and verified load. No improvisation is acceptable here — it is a question of human lives, not of production.

The available height determines the vocabulary that is possible. Under a limited height, the drops and the long descents disappear, and the act loses precisely what creates its effect.

Contemporary depends on the floor

Contemporary dance works on the floor: supports, slides, controlled falls. Cold tiling, gravel or thick carpet radically change what can be done.

In return, it adapts to almost any volume and moves easily from one space to another — a real asset for events spread across several locations.

Choosing according to the moment

Aerial creates an immediate effect: eyes go up, phones come out. It is a high point, short, to be placed at the peak of the evening.

Contemporary sets an atmosphere, holds attention for longer and copes better with the closeness of the audience. The two complement each other very well within the same programme, provided each is given its own space.
